DAVID'S DAILY
DEVOTIONAL
Photo by Andrik Langfield on Unsplash
WELCOME!
This devotional blog is a weekday "non-fluffy" devotional in the Word based on the two greatest commandments: "Love the Lord, love your neighbor." Each devotion will answer these three questions: What does the message speak to me (the author) today? What is it saying to you (the reader)? And what are we going to do about it? The Bible will speak to us every day if we will let it. So what is it saying today?
You can just come to this page every morning to see the latest blog post, but if you prefer email, subscribe below to have the link to the daily devotion dropped in your email inbox every morning.

Purloined Peace
Read Isaiah 26:3 (NKJV) You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You. Trust in the Lord forever, for in Yah, the Lord, is everlasting strength. What it is speaking to me: If you were alive in the 90s, you might remember those 3D illusion drawings. You know, with the really weird patterns, and you had to cross your eyes or squint just right and this 3D image would emerge from the crazy background and form something. I remember as a

Patience Produces
Read Romans 5:3-5 (KJV) And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. What it is speaking to me: I hate waiting. As children, we hate waiting and we are generally terrible at it. Then we grow up, and I know that you all got better, but there are still times I

Say Less
Read Proverbs 10:18-19 (NKJV) — "Whoever hides hatred has lying lips, and whoever spreads slander is a fool. In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, but he who restrains his lips is wise." What It Is Speaking to Me We have all been there. In the midst of a great conversation, a terrible fight, or anything in between — and we do it. Or more accurately, we say it. That one word, that one phrase we shouldn't have said. That one word that was over the line. The rude sentenc

Weaponized Joy
Read Nehemiah 8:9-12 And Nehemiah, who was the governor, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, "This day is holy to the Lord your God; do not mourn nor weep." For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the Law. Then he said to them, "Go your way, eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your st

Prayers for the Worst
Read Matthew 5:43-48 "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even

A Sluggardly Garden
**Reader's Note:** For my attentive readers, you might have felt a sense of familiarity with yesterday's devotional. I had been reading back through James, and those verses stood out to me, and I wrote up the devotional. I didn't notice until I was completely finished that it was strikingly similar to one I wrote a while back. After the self-flagellation for this oversight, I considered writing/posting another one instead. But I decided to follow the inspiration, and hoped th

Liberally Without Reproach
Read James 1:4-6 (NKJV) But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. What it is speaking to me: It is obvious perhaps that we think of these verses in the context of seeking wisdom for

"Orion"
Read Ephesians 4:29 (KJV) Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. What it is speaking to me: Confession time. I am not a road rage guy. I don't struggle with anger in traffic (most of the time), I don't get particularly annoyed at people cutting me off or other things that often annoy a daily driver in a busy metropolis. BUT. I do have this one thing: when I see someone

Stuart Little Eyes
Read Luke 17:20–21 (ESV) Being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, he answered them, "The kingdom of God is not coming with signs to be observed, nor will they say, 'Look, here it is!' or 'There it is!' For behold, the kingdom of God is in your midst." What It's Speaking to Me In 2009, a Hungarian art historian named Gergely Barki was doing something all good fathers do: sitting on his couch watching a movie he doesn't care for because his daughter love

Spiritual Prep Cooks
Read Luke 10:1-2 After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to go. And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” What it is speaking to me: My first job was in a kitchen as a dishwasher. Eventually, I worked my way up to line cook, and one of my jobs was doi

Our Groan to His Ears
Read Romans 8:26–27 (NKJV) Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. What it is speaking to me: I have a to-do app. It is awesome. I can schedule reoccurring tasks, subtasks, proje

Non-Performance Seal
Read 2 Corinthians 1:21–22 (NKJV) Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. What It's Speaking to Me Have you ever been in a performance-based relationship? Whether a romantic relationship, or perhaps with a family member or friend? A relationship like that at your job with your boss is to be at least somewhat expected, but if you have ever experienced that kind of dyna

Fruit by Trial
Read Galatians 5:22–26 (NKJV) But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. What It's Speaking to Me I learned songs in children's church about the fruit of t

Purpose, Presence, Peace
Read Isaiah 41:8–10 (NKJV) "But you, Israel, are My servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, The descendants of Abraham My friend. You whom I have taken from the ends of the earth, And called from its farthest regions, And said to you, 'You are My servant, I have chosen you and have not cast you away: Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.'" What it is speaking to

Mind Your "Because"
Read 1 Corinthians 4:3-5 (NIV) I care very little if I am judged by you or by any human court; indeed, I do not even judge myself. My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. It is the Lord who judges me. Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart. At that time each will receive their praise from God. Matthew 7:1–2 (NIV) "Do not judge,

The "Silent" Cog
Read 1 Thessalonians 4:10–12 (CSB) In fact, you are doing this toward all the brothers and sisters in the entire region of Macedonia. But we encourage you, brothers and sisters, to do this even more, to seek to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you, so that you may behave properly in the presence of outsiders and not be dependent on anyone. The Hope Within You
Read 1 Peter 3:14–16 (NKJV) But even if you should suffer for righteousness' sake, you are blessed. "And do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled." But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear; having a good conscience, that when they defame you as evildoers, those who revile your good conduct in Christ may be ashamed. LET THERE BE LIGHT
Read Psalm 89:5–8 (NKJV) And the heavens will praise Your wonders, O Lord;Your faithfulness also in the assembly of the saints. For who in the heavens can be compared to the Lord?Who among the sons of the mighty can be likened to the Lord? God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be held in reverence by all those around Him. O Lord God of hosts, who is mighty like You, O Lord? Your faithfulness also surrounds You. What it is speaking to me: There are

A Trued Heart
Read Matthew 5:8 (ESV)"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God." What It Is Speaking to Me When it comes to construction and carpenters, the quality of the work a person does on the parts nobody will ever see tells you almost everything about them. The stud framing. The insulation behind the drywall. The wiring inside the wall. The concrete footing underground. Nobody's going to come to your house and ask to see your footing, your insulation and wiring, or the s

All You Need Is Love...
Read 1 Corinthians 13:4–7 (NASB) Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
