James 1:4-6 (NKJV) But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.
What it is speaking to me:
It is obvious perhaps that we think of these verses in the context of seeking wisdom for spiritual things, or personal things like friends and family, or big financial decisions or job changes. But James writes that God gives to all LIBERALLY, without reproach. Meaning we can seek wisdom about all sorts of things. Here is a not-comprehensive list of practical things that I could quickly remember that I have asked God for help in how to solve issues in each respective area, and He has provided guidance:
Computer Software
Networking & Internet Infrastructure
Stage lighting
Sound Reinforcement
Lawnmower Maintenance
Electricity
Plumbing
Framing and Construction
Automobiles
Shopping
Cooking
Lost Items
Self-Defense
Musical Gear
Live Performances
Waiting Tables
And many, many, many more things. I would have to list almost every practical area of my life throughout its history. My point is the availability of God's wisdom is not limited from God's side. The only limit is the amount we ask for. "Liberally, without reproach" is what He has promised. It is rather exciting to think that the Creator of All Things, the One who has Unlimited Knowledge, has offered to provide wisdom to anyone who asks.
So let's get asking!
What is it saying to you?
Do you limit your requests for wisdom to spiritual things? When have you asked God for practical solutions for everyday things? What are you looking for guidance on now?
What are we going to do about it?
Name a confusing problem you face today and specifically ask God for a practical solution, not just peace about it.
