Ruling Past

Isaiah 43:18-19 (NIV) Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.
What is this saying to me?
Memory can be a cruel mistress sometimes. I can't tell you why particular memories have stuck around so long while others have faded, and why they show up at the worst times. Late at night, right before a big decision, sometimes even in the middle of an unrelated conversation. They just surface, uninvited, and sit there at the front of your brain.
Sometimes we think that letting those memories rehash endlessly in those moments is a form of responsibility, as if by feeling bad about it, we somehow prove we've learned the lesson. But in reality that's not conviction anymore. That's just rumination dressed up in a costume that looks spiritual. Rumination can be a side effect of therapy, but never a side effect of God's grace. If repentance is real, God has moved on. He is doing a new thing, which means he's telling me it doesn't get to write today's story.
There's a really important difference between remembering something and being ruled by it. Don't let your past rule you, or you'll have made it an idol, and you know well how that works out. Don't let the idol of your past make you miss out on the new thing God is doing. Today. Right now.

What's the "former thing" you replay most often, and why does it still have a grip on you?
Do you actually believe God is doing something new in your life right now, or does that feel too abstract to trust?
What would change about your day if your past no longer had final authority over your story in your mind?
What are we going to do about it?
Pick one regret you keep circling back to, just one. Write it down on paper, actually write it, not just think it. Then underneath it, write: "God says to forget it. New things are coming."
