Thermostat Mind
Read
Colossians 3:1-3 (KJV) If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.
What it is speaking to me
The HVAC in our house is nearing end of life. She's a stubborn old gal though, and she tries hard. Real hard. There is a lot going against her though. The house is over a century old, so originally built without central heating and cooling. At some point, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum (emphasis on DUM) ran some pretty janky HVAC through the house. So the venting and ductwork are rather inefficient. On top of that, the house is not particularly well insulated, and the exterior doors and some windows, while probably not original, are quite old and leak a fair amount. So while in winter the heat works well enough to be comfortable, our hellish summer heat is too much for my poor old system.
But fret not dear readers, I have a nice new thermostat. And I can set the temperature for my house from ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD. While that is unnecessarily handy, it is pretty darn easy to set the thermostat to the desired temperature. The thing is, as you probably know (unless your home is remarkably well made) the thermostat setting and the reality of what your HVAC can do are two different things.
The thing is, setting your mind is like setting a thermostat. It does not mean you never feel hot. It means you know what you are aiming for. Things above, not things on the earth. And unlike our HVAC, God has made us new creations. He has given us His Spirit, that works perfectly. While our flesh might be more like my HVAC, and cause us to get too hot or too cold, it does not mean our mind (read thermostat) cannot be set correctly. We can set our mind on the right things, and the rest of us will eventually catch up.
What is it saying to you?
What is your mind set on by default?
What would it look like to reset it to "things above"?
What are we going to do about it?
Set three phone alarms today labeled "Things above." When they go off, redirect one thought toward Christ.
