DAVID'S DAILY
DEVOTIONAL
Photo by Andrik Langfield on Unsplash
WELCOME!
This devotional blog is a weekday "non-fluffy" devotional in the Word based on the two greatest commandments: "Love the Lord, love your neighbor." Each devotion will answer these three questions: What does the message speak to me (the author) today? What is it saying to you (the reader)? And what are we going to do about it? The Bible will speak to us every day if we will let it. So what is it saying today?
You can just come to this page every morning to see the latest blog post, but if you prefer email, subscribe below to have the link to the daily devotion dropped in your email inbox every morning.

Whatever you do...
Read Colossians 3:23–24 “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.” What it is speaking to me: I can’t say that I like doing everything. As a kid, you don’t like doing most jobs—especially chores. As you get older, some chores don’t bother you as much, and then you start working. Unless you are incredibly lucky, every job you have will have at l

A Little More...
Read Matthew 6:33 ESV But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Philippians 4:19 ESV And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. What it is speaking to me today: I think most people are like me; we feel we could use a little more in the "resource department." That can look like many things. Sometimes it’s physical (feeling stronger, faster, or smarter), financial (a lit

Silent Souls
Read Psalm 62:1-2, 5-7 Truly my soul silently waits for God; From Him comes my salvation. He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be greatly moved. My soul, wait silently for God alone, For my expectation is from Him. He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be moved. In God is my salvation and my glory; The rock of my strength, And my refuge, is in God. What it is speaking to me: I have been in some crazy storms—and

Guardrails
Read Proverbs 4:20–27 (NKJV) My son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart; For they are life to those who find them, And health to all their flesh. Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life. Put away from you a deceitful mouth, And put perverse lips far from you. Let your eyes look straight ahead, And your eyelids look right before you. Ponder t

Refined By His Presence
Read Isaiah 6:1,5-7 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple... So I said: “Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, The LORD of hosts.” Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a live coal which he had taken with the tongs from the altar. And he touched my mout

Refined for Usefulness
Read 2 Timothy 2:20–22. But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay, some for honor and some for dishonor. Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work. Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. What it is speaking to me: When I got into wor

Trial By Fire
Read 1 Peter 4:12-13 Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. What it is speaking to me: It is humbling to admit that I have been following Jesus for north of 30 years now and get surprised by trials that come my way. It is encouraging that I seem to be in the share

Consuming Fire
Read: Hebrews 12:28-29 Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire. What it speaks to me today: When you are cleaning a room, there are multiple levels of clean. I know some neat freaks reading this right now have just been triggered. I apologize for this early morning trauma. Take another drink of your coffee, take a deep breath, and give m

Fire is...good?
Read: Malachi 3:2–3 (NKJV) "But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears? For He is like a **refiner’s fire** and like launderers’ soap. He will sit as a refiner and a purifier of silver; He will purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer to the Lord an offering in righteousness." What it is saying to me today: Fire=burn=bad. (in my best caveman speak) We are all raised to understand that fire is dangerous. I

Listen to the Spirit
Read: John 16:13–15. However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you. What is it speaking to me today: In these verses, Jesus is speaking to his

Let Him pray...
Read: Romans 8:26 "Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered." What it is speaking to me today: The first summer after I finished high school I worked for a plumber who focused on new construction, but from time to time would take repair jobs. One time, we went to an old farmhouse in the middle of nowhere to replace a water

His Presence
Read 2 Corinthians 3:17 Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. What this speaks to me today There was a revival dubbed the Hebrides Revival which happened on the Isle of Lewis off the coast of Scotland in 1949. It was marked by spontaneous church gatherings and great repentance across the island. People would suddenly feel compelled to go to the church at 11:00 PM or 2:00 AM without any announcement, and prayer and worship would con

Where Does It Begin?
Read Acts 1:4-9, 12-14, 2:1-3 And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” And He said to them, “It is not for you to

By my spirit...
Zechariah 4:6 –"Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ Says the Lord of hosts." What it speaks to me today: My perception of myself is a slippery thing. Sometimes I see myself clearly, sometimes I don't. When I was a child, I knew the limits of my might and power....I had none. I was physically weaker than the adults around me, lacked their resources, wisdom and knowledge, and I wielded no real authority, except over my stuffed animals. And I was keenly aware of that

Why am I writing this?
Over the years, you get asked as a church leader about recommendations for devotionals. My problem is that I don't care much for devotionals. I know, I know that I am not supposed to say that as a Christian. Perhaps I simply haven't found the right one for me. But generally, I find that the devotionals I try are often flowery (I am a man), over-spiritualized (silly), tough-talking (I get it, you are a man trying to be tough, but calm down), or downright dull. So inevitably,
