Matthew 6:33 ESV But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Philippians 4:19 ESV And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
What it is speaking to me today:
I think most people are like me; we feel we could use a little more in the "resource department." That can look like many things. Sometimes it’s physical (feeling stronger, faster, or smarter), financial (a little more in savings, a fatter 401k), temporal (never having enough time to accomplish what we'd like), or even spiritual (more gifting, wisdom, or power).
There isn’t anything inherently wrong with wanting "a little more," is there?
Michael Peters likes to say that "'More' is an idol that is never satisfied." Most of us don't think of our "I wish I had a little more" thoughts as a form of serious idolatry—and checking our hearts, it probably isn't in most cases. However, it occurred to me today that the thought "I wish I had more" is a dangerous one to feed.
God has always provided for us, and He always will; He promises this in His Word. Because of that, I never have to worry (which is really just the illusion of control) that God will fail to provide for my family or me. Ever.
So, since that is settled, what do I do with those pesky "I wish I had more" thoughts? I seek first the Kingdom. I seek His righteousness. I bring those "more" thoughts under His authority and wait to see what God will do.
Deuteronomy 28:12–13 (ESV): The Lord will open to you his good treasury, the heavens, to give the rain to your land in its season and to bless all the work of your hands. And you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow. And the Lord will make you the head and not the tail, and you shall only go up and not down, if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God...
What is it saying to you?
Do you ever have those "I wish I had more..." thoughts? What do you do with them? Do they lead you toward discontentment or toward prayer?
What are we going to do about it?
Think about the specific area where you have been wishing for "a little more." Today, pray and ask God to show you exactly how He is already providing for you in that space.
