Conquering Fear

Romans 8:37–39 (KJV)

In all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

What It Is Speaking to Me

We are pretty good at imagining worst-case scenarios. Give us a quiet moment, and our minds can come up with things that may never happen, problems we cannot fix, and futures that vacillate between hopelessly bleak and something worse.

Money (or the lack thereof) can cause these spirals. Or bad news from a family, friend, or doctor. Maybe its your job, or something that plagues your mind that nobody else even knows about. We can get so focused on what might happen, that we start living as if it already has.

The Bible does not pretend that suffering is not real. Paul in this letter already mentioned tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, peril, and the sword. Those do not strike me as small problems by anyone's standards. Rather even one of those would strike at least me as quite serious problems. But then he says that in all these things, we are more than conquerors through Christ.

Not because we are strong enough, or because nothing bad can happen(in his case, it seems as a lot already had). It is not because we finally got everything under our control.

We are more than conquerors because the worst thing we can imagine does not have the authority to separate us from the love of God. Death cannot do it. Life cannot do it. The present cannot do it. The future cannot do it. There is no circumstance, no failure, no fear, and no created thing strong enough to break what God has joined together in Christ....namely us.

What is the worst-case scenario you keep rehearsing in your mind?

Have you been treating that fear as if it is stronger than God’s love?

What would change today if you really believed that His love for you is THAT strong?

What Are We Going to Do About It?

Name the worst-case scenario you fear today, then stand in faith on the absolute finality of God’s unbreakable covenant love we have in Christ.
