Proverbs 28:26 He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered.

Proverbs 12:15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.

What it is speaking to me:

You know who loves unsolicited advice?? This guy.

Just kidding. Myself, and most of the rest of humanity, does not love unsolicited advice. I am not saying I am right for my feelings on this, by the way. Just because the advice is unsolicited, it doesn't mean it is bad advice. But people love to give advice whether you ask for it or not. Usually it is about things that are not that important, though: best place to buy this, best way to fix this thing around the house, the right way to load the dishwasher, mow the lawn, grill the burger, place the furniture, pour a drink, etc.

These verses aren't really talking about the small things in life. These verses are talking about the big things: marriages, kids, job opportunities, family strife, money, houses, to name just a few.

Do we seek advice about THOSE things? These proverbs are trying to communicate something important: that we aren't as smart, knowledgeable, experienced, or wise as we think we are. When it comes to the big things of life, instead of running from unsolicited advice, we should be running TO solicit advice.

Run fast, run hard.

What is it saying to you?

When do you seek advice? How do you receive advice? How do you know who to ask?

What are we going to do about it?

Before making a major decision, intentionally seek advice from a wise, trusted Christian mentor or leader.
