Matthew 6:19–24

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. The eye is the lamp of the body. So if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.”

What it is speaking to me today

What are we focused on while we’re on earth? Today, as in Jesus’ day, people concern themselves with earthly things—wealth, possessions, influence, power, status, and everything else under the sun. That’s His point: we shouldn’t be concerned with the things under the sun but with the things above it. Everything on earth fades, gets taken, or wears out. But the treasures we prepare for ourselves in heaven are indestructible.

And Jesus says we are the ones laying them up. Our actions here on earth lead to real results in heaven. It’s not just a matter of doing our best and hoping God notices on Judgment Day. The work we do now is already going toward preparing an indestructible heavenly treasure.

What are we focused on? When taking a picture with a traditional camera, the subject of the photo is what you put IN focus. The rest of the photo is composed around what’s in focus—the main thing, the thing that is most important. Everything else is blurred, secondary, not as significant.

What is it saying to you?

If your life were a photo, what would be in focus? What would be blurred?

Do you want that to change?

Jesus said, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Who or what has your heart? Is it Christ? Is He the main focus in the photograph of your heart?

What are we going to do about it?

Take a moment to pray and to check what the focus of your heart truly is.
