DAVID'S DAILY
DEVOTIONAL
Photo by Andrik Langfield on Unsplash
WELCOME!
This devotional blog is a weekday "non-fluffy" devotional in the Word based on the two greatest commandments: "Love the Lord, love your neighbor." Each devotion will answer these three questions: What does the message speak to me (the author) today? What is it saying to you (the reader)? And what are we going to do about it? The Bible will speak to us every day if we will let it. So what is it saying today?
You can just come to this page every morning to see the latest blog post, but if you prefer email, subscribe below to have the link to the daily devotion dropped in your email inbox every morning.

Read Psalms 34:15, 17-19 (NIV) The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous, and his ears are attentive to their cry; The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. The righteous person may have many troubles, but the LORD delivers him from them all; What it is speaking to me No one gets through this life unscathed. The Lord has been gracious to me in lett

Check Heart Engine
Read: Jeremiah 17:9-10 (KJV) The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings. What it's speaking to me I was raised in the "Golden" era of Disney animation. But Disney has been pumping out a certain type of song theme for decades. Whole generations of kids have been raised on songs like the ones below: "A Dream

Bring on The Fleas
Read Philippians 4:4 (NKJV) Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice![1] What it is speaking to me Paul wrote "Rejoice in the Lord always" from a prison. Scholars traditionally place Philippians in his Roman imprisonment around AD 60 to 62. He was bound by chains and under constant guard. It reminded me of another believers story about rejoicing in a dark dark place. Corrie ten Boom lived this out in World War II. She and her sister Betsie were sent to Ravensbrüc

What The Checklist Never Could
Read Matthew 22:37-40 (ESV) And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets." What it is speaking to me: If you didn't keep up with this series of devotionals on the Ten Commandments, it seemed fitting to summarize the overarching point

What Do You Want?
Read Exodus 20:17 (NIV) “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.” What is it saying to me? The first commandment tells me not to put another god before the Lord. The tenth tells me to look at what I want. Those might seem like different commandments, but I don’t think it’s an accident that the Ten Commandments begin and end with these two. T

Covenant Break
Read Exodus 20:14 (KJV) Thou shalt not commit adultery. What it is speaking to me: Growing up, the 6th and 7th commandments were the ones you were sure you’d got handled. Check the box, move on to the next command. Because who would murder and cheat, right? Mentally you reduced it to a physical act, and if you hadn’t done it, two down, eight to go. Except Jesus doesn’t let it stay that small. In Matthew 5, He expands it to our hearts, where the potential sin was hiding the wh

Peace Referee
Read: Colossians 3:15-17 (NLT) And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful. Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts. And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God

Awaking Idols
Read Habakkuk 2:18-20 "What profit is the image, that its maker should carve it, The molded image, a teacher of lies, That the maker of its mold should trust in it, To make mute idols? Woe to him who says to wood, 'Awake!' To silent stone, 'Arise! It shall teach!' Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver, Yet in it there is no breath at all. "But the Lord is in His holy temple. Let all the earth keep silence before Him." What It Is Speaking to Me Idolatry. Ancient weird st

Rock vs. Calendar
Read Psalm 61:1-3Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer. From the ends of the earth I call to you,I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe. What It Is Speaking to Me You ever been in the spot where there aren't enough hours in the day to accomplish the things that need to be done? What about the week? The month? You ever feel like you're in a season of being overworked, with too much

Resolved in the Unresolved
Read Psalm 37:7-8 (ESV) Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; do not fret over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices! Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil. What it is speaking to me David wrote this psalm watching wicked men prosper while he, the anointed king, was still dodging spears and hiding in caves. He was writing from the middle of the injustice, telling himself (and us) to

Show Me
Read: Exodus 33:18-22 And [Moses] said, "Please, show me Your glory." Then He said, "I will make all My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion." But He said, "You cannot see My face; for no man shall see Me, and live." And the Lord said, "Here is a place by Me, and you shall stand on the rock. So it shall be, while My glory passes by
