Resolved in the Unresolved

Psalm 37:7-8 (ESV) Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; do not fret over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices! Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil.

What it is speaking to me

David wrote this psalm watching wicked men prosper while he, the anointed king, was still dodging spears and hiding in caves. He was writing from the middle of the injustice, telling himself (and us) to be still anyway. It never seems to be “be still” in a vacuum of peace. It’s “be still” while you’re watching someone else’s evil devices work out just fine for them, maybe even they are working against you...and it's working. Fretting comes naturally in that spot. Anger about the injustice of it all feels earned. And King David just says, no. Forsake it.

Because “fret not yourself; it tends only to evil” isn’t just a warning about our mood. Fretting doesn’t fix injustice. It just multiplies it inside of us, perhaps boiling into sin. The anger we think is protecting us from being taken advantage of again is usually just eating at our own peace. Trust that God sees what we can’t fix and He isn’t asleep at the wheel.

I don’t know if you have an unresolved thing right now. Maybe it’s a relationship that never got the apology it deserved. Maybe it’s watching someone at work cut corners and still get the promotion. Maybe it’s something bigger and more serious than that, something that’s been sitting in you for years without an answer. Whatever it is, this verse doesn’t tell you to pretend it’s all fine. It tells you where to put your worry, and where to put your trust.

Where are you fretting over something that feels unresolved or unfair?

Is your anger actually protecting you from anything, or is it just wearing you down?

What would it look like to be still about this specific thing today, not forever, just today?

Identify a situation that feels unjust or unresolved. Pray Psalm 37:7 over it today, by name if you need to. Release the anger. Choose to rest.
