DAVID'S DAILY
DEVOTIONAL
Photo by Andrik Langfield on Unsplash
WELCOME!
This devotional blog is a weekday "non-fluffy" devotional in the Word based on the two greatest commandments: "Love the Lord, love your neighbor." Each devotion will answer these three questions: What does the message speak to me (the author) today? What is it saying to you (the reader)? And what are we going to do about it? The Bible will speak to us every day if we will let it. So what is it saying today?
You can just come to this page every morning to see the latest blog post, but if you prefer email, subscribe below to have the link to the daily devotion dropped in your email inbox every morning.

LET THERE BE LIGHT
Read Psalm 89:5–8 (NKJV) And the heavens will praise Your wonders, O Lord;Your faithfulness also in the assembly of the saints. For who in the heavens can be compared to the Lord?Who among the sons of the mighty can be likened to the Lord? God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be held in reverence by all those around Him. O Lord God of hosts, who is mighty like You, O Lord? Your faithfulness also surrounds You. What it is speaking to me: There are

YOUR RACE CAR
Read Ephesians 2:8-10 (ESV) For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. What It Is Speaking to Me Ever used the wrong tool on a job? A screwdriver as a hammer? A hammer as a screwdriver? (Not even sure how you would do that...) How well does it

Tired Sheep
Read John 10:10–11 (KJV)The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. What it is speaking to me: The devil isn't stupid. There are certainly times he takes the frontal and direct approach. But he can accomplish the same end using different and more subtle means. Fatigue is one of his favorite tools. A

Stuck or Abiding?
Read 1 Corinthians 7:23–24 (NKJV) You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men. Brethren, let each one remain with God in that state in which he was called. What It Is Speaking to Me You know the feeling: You're stuck in traffic on the way to a job that doesn't excite you anymore. You're sitting across the lunch table from the same difficult situation(person) you've been sitting across all year. The job stinks, the house is too small, the family is too contentious,

Salvific Silence
Read Lamentations 3:25–28 "The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord. It is good for a man to bear the yoke while he is young. Let him sit alone in silence, for the Lord has laid it on him." What It Is Speaking to Me Jean-Paul Sartre said, "If you're lonely when you're alone, you're in bad company." Maybe we don't feel lonely, but we don't necessarily enjoy it either. I think we live in a

Identify Thirst
Read Psalm 42:1–3 "As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God? My tears have been my food day and night, while people say to me all day long, 'Where is your God?'" What Is It Speaking to Me? You ever been really thirsty? I mean really thirsty? If you have ever worked outside in a Missouri summer all day, you know what I am talking about — where your throat feels like a

Prepare the Vessel
Read 2 Timothy 2:20-21 But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay, some for honor and some for dishonor. Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work. What it is speaking to me: When I worked at the coffee shop, there would be busy and slow times. Busy times were all the commuters and pre-work coffee people coming in for

Mindful Presence
Read Acts 17:27–28 (KJV) That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring. What It Is Speaking to Me It is the simplest, most basic things in life that we take for granted. Statistically, if you grew up in America, you probably never had to wonder if there would be a roof over y

Worry Catch
Read 1 Peter 5:6–7 NIV "Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you." What it is speaking to me: I came to the game of catch late in life. We weren't a big baseball family growing up. I played a lot of football, soccer, and basketball, but not baseball. I never really owned a glove or learned to throw a baseball correctly. It wasn't until college that I started tossing a ball

Forget Not
Read Psalm 103:1–3 (KJV) Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; What it is speaking to me: Memory is a wonderful thing. If I were to ask you, "What is the best meal experience you have ever had?" a few experiences would likely come to mind. Now that I have asked, I am thinking of one of mine, and I am going to share

Embracing Discomfort
Read Luke 9:22–24 (KJV) "Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day. And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it." What it is speaking to me: There is so much in these verses, b

Which Finish Line?
Read Matthew 16:25–27 (KJV) For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works. What it is speaking to me: Success is a moving target because success alway

Everyday I'm Hustling
Read Psalm 62:1–2, 8 “Truly my soul silently waits for God; from Him comes my salvation. He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be greatly moved. Trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Selah.” What It Is Speaking to Me Hustle is good… most of the time. My first few jobs were in the food service industry—and those jobs are all hustle. On your feet, constantly moving, always working. I loved it.

Properly Labeled
Read 2 Corinthians 5:16–17 Therefore from now on we recognize no one according to the flesh; even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him in this way no longer. Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. What it is speaking to me People like labels. I recently had to take a bunch of personality tests for a class I’m taking—DISC, Myers-Briggs, Enneagram, PPK, etc. Perhaps you

Who is Speaking?
Read Mark 13:11 – “And when they bring you to trial and deliver you over, do not be anxious beforehand about what you are to say, but say whatever is given you in that hour, for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit.” What it is speaking to me I’ve never been in a courtroom to defend my life—and I pray I never will. But I have been in other rooms, having to defend my faith or stand up for truth in situations that could lead to uncomfortable consequences. I’ve also foun

Where are you standing?
Read Romans 5:1–5 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the

Silent Souls
Read Psalm 62:1-2, 5-7 Truly my soul silently waits for God; From Him comes my salvation. He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be greatly moved. My soul, wait silently for God alone, For my expectation is from Him. He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be moved. In God is my salvation and my glory; The rock of my strength, And my refuge, is in God. What it is speaking to me: I have been in some crazy storms—and
