James 1:5 But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

What it is speaking to me:

What is wisdom? How is it different from knowledge? For the sake of this devotional, think of knowledge as knowing something, and wisdom as discerningly applying that knowledge.

It’s easy to think about wisdom as a “Bible word” and assume this verse only means that when we need help with spiritual things or spiritual situations, God will help us. In fairness, that is true. He will. But we do ourselves a disservice by limiting the wisdom in this verse to just “Bible things.”

What if the Creator of the universe, who knows all things, had wisdom to share about our geometry homework, the real estate pitch, the electrical work, the software issue that is making the printer not work, the brownies not rising, the peppers getting taken by squirrels, the broken floorboard, the splintered foot, where to plant that bush, or the car not starting?

You might think I used a bunch of random examples to make a point, but in fact only one of those is not an example from my own life. Can you guess which one? Every other one is a real example where God shared his wisdom with me for that problem, that situation.

God doesn’t just have something to share with us in the “Bible” parts of our lives. He has something to say about our WHOLE lives. James tells us all we have to do is ask.

If you ask me, that’s pretty cool.

What is it saying to you?

Think of the last time you asked God for wisdom. How did it help?

Think of the last problem you had, big or small. Did you ask God for wisdom? Why or why not?

What are we going to do about it?

Name a confusing problem you faced yesterday, or one you’re facing today, and specifically ask God for a practical solution, not just “peace” about it. Watch the Creator work.
