Romans 12:1–3 (KJV) I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

What It Is Speaking to Me

"God Helps Those Who Help Themselves."

"To Thine Own Self Be True."

"Survival of the Fittest."

"You Only Live Once (YOLO)."

"Follow Your Heart."

You have probably heard at least one of these before or maybe all of them. They are catchy, and they are shared prolifically. Some of these are obviously ridiculous. Some less obvious. But all of them contradict Scripture.

"God Helps Those Who Help Themselves" vs. Psalm 121:2 — "My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth."

"To Thine Own Self Be True" vs. Matthew 16:24 — "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me."

"Survival of the Fittest" vs. Matthew 5:5 — "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth."

"You Only Live Once (YOLO)" vs. Hebrews 9:27 — "It is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment."

"Follow Your Heart" vs. Jeremiah 17:9 — "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?"

I think we underestimate the power of words. They grab hold of our minds and begin to shape the lens through which we see the world. This is part of what Paul is writing to the Roman church here. The world will always have catchy and alluring sayings — but those sayings above as well as many others carry a worldview that stands in direct contrast to the Word of God.

Our job is to see these seemingly innocent phrases for what they are: worldly thoughts that oppose the wisdom of God.

We are shaped by what we say...so what are we saying?

What Is It Saying to You?

Have you let a saying of the world shape your worldview, the lens through which you see everything?

What Are We Going to Do About It?

Identify a prevailing cultural lie you have accidentally taken in, and actively refute it with Scripture. Let His Word reshape the way you see it.
