What It Is Speaking to Me
Today, I stood at the edge of the ocean. Maybe you have too.
I am more of a mountain guy myself, but I have to admit the ocean really is stunning. It's scale puts humanity in perspective. There are places in the ocean deeper than Mount Everest is tall. There are entire ecosystems down there thriving under pressures that would crush a human being in seconds. And none of it waits on us. The waves don't ask permission, the tide doesn't negotiate, and the wind doesn't care that you have somewhere to be. It just keeps going. It was going long before I got here, and it will be going long after I leave. I watch us humans interact with it, but at no point is humanity in control of it. We can and have tamed so much around us, but the ocean has been and always be untameable. It makes you feel small, and that is a good thing.
God spoke all of that into existence. He didn't labor over it, it wasn't work for him. He set the boundary lines of every ocean (Proverbs 8:29) — and those waters have never once crossed a line He drew. Not once. In all of human history.
Sometimes, its good to be reminded of how small we really are. And get just a hint of how big God really is. Perspective matters. It reorients us, even if its just while we stand at the edge of the vast waters, to what reality really is.
