DAVID'S DAILY
DEVOTIONAL
Photo by Andrik Langfield on Unsplash
WELCOME!
This devotional blog is a weekday "non-fluffy" devotional in the Word based on the two greatest commandments: "Love the Lord, love your neighbor." Each devotion will answer these three questions: What does the message speak to me (the author) today? What is it saying to you (the reader)? And what are we going to do about it? The Bible will speak to us every day if we will let it. So what is it saying today?
You can just come to this page every morning to see the latest blog post, but if you prefer email, subscribe below to have the link to the daily devotion dropped in your email inbox every morning.

Live Peaceably
Read Romans 12:17-18 Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. What it is speaking to me: When I was a child there was a really mean old lady that lived a few houses down. She was rude, mean, and scary- like a villain out of a children's book. Her front yard had a sweetgum tree in it, the kind that drops those little brown spiky balls. One day, I gathered as many

"LAAAZZZY"
Read Proverbs 31:17 She also rises while it is yet night, And provides food for her household, And a portion for her maidservants. She considers a field and buys it; From her profits she plants a vineyard. She girds herself with strength, And strengthens her arms. She perceives that her merchandise is good, And her lamp does not go out by night. What it is speaking to me: I had a Geometry teacher in high school who was the last of his era. He was the kind of teacher from the.

Thought Interrogation
Read 2 Corinthians 10:5 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, What It Is Speaking to Me I love interrogation room scenes in movies and TV. The bad guy is sitting there, the cops are working angl

Properly Labeled
Read 2 Corinthians 5:16–17 Therefore from now on we recognize no one according to the flesh; even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him in this way no longer. Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. What it is speaking to me People like labels. I recently had to take a bunch of personality tests for a class I’m taking—DISC, Myers-Briggs, Enneagram, PPK, etc. Perhaps you

What's in Focus
Read Matthew 6:19–24 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. The eye is the lamp of the body. So if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of

Bear a Burden
Read Galatians 6:2 Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ. What it is speaking to me: This verse got me thinking today, Which law is Paul referencing? Usually when he mentions the law, he is referring to the Mosaic law, but he qualifies it this time with "the law of Christ." In the chapter preceding this one Paul writes, "For the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in the statement, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF’” (Gal 5:14) . So in this

The Dishwasher Perspective
Read Luke 10:1–2 “After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. He told them, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.’” What it is speaking to me: Have you ever worked a job—or had a task at work—that felt completely overwhelming? One of those situations where there’s so much to do, not enoug

Ask For Wisdom
Read James 1:5 But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him. What it is speaking to me: What is wisdom? How is it different from knowledge? For the sake of this devotional, think of knowledge as knowing something, and wisdom as discerningly applying that knowledge. It’s easy to think about wisdom as a “Bible word” and assume this verse only means that when we need help with spiritual things o

Who is Speaking?
Read Mark 13:11 – “And when they bring you to trial and deliver you over, do not be anxious beforehand about what you are to say, but say whatever is given you in that hour, for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit.” What it is speaking to me I’ve never been in a courtroom to defend my life—and I pray I never will. But I have been in other rooms, having to defend my faith or stand up for truth in situations that could lead to uncomfortable consequences. I’ve also foun

From Abundance
Read Luke 6:43-45 “For a good tree does not bear bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. For every tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. What Is It Speaking to Me? I love seeing those old

Swift to Hear
Read James 1:19–20 So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God. What it is speaking to me: It is interesting to me, in reading this today, that there seems to be a connection to hasty speech and anger. Which, if you have had any argument during your lifetime, is an obvious connection... but it seems that James also offers a balm to quell this anger problem: being swi

Cheerleaders
Read 1 Thessalonians 5:11 ESV Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. What it is speaking to me It should not come as any surprise to you dear reader, that cheerleading is not in my background. Besides the outfits not suiting my style, I do not possess the proper demeanor—too few smiles, cheers, and pom-poms. While I don’t have an affinity for the " sport" of cheerleading, there is a place for it in the church—not the pom-pom version

Going to Make It
Read (For context, read all of Psalm 105.) Verses 5 & 8 Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced. He remembers his covenant forever, the promise he made, for a thousand generations. What it is speaking to me We are pretty diligent about safeguarding what our children watch on TV. Every once in a while, though, we end up watching something suspenseful enough that my son becomes worried and keeps asking, “What is going to happen? Are they

Where are you standing?
Read Romans 5:1–5 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the

Heart Idols
Read Exodus 20:3–4 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them. What It Is Speaking to Me When I was in #### (redacted for a reason) last year, I was in a market and noticed a woman sitting next to a beautiful porcelain doll. I assumed she was there t

Family histories?
Read Titus 3:6–9 God poured out the Spirit on us freely. Then those who trust in God will be careful to commit themselves to doing good. These things are excellent and beneficial for everyone. But keep away from foolish disagreements. Don’t argue about family histories. Don’t make trouble. Don’t fight about what the law teaches. Don’t argue about things like that. It doesn’t do any good. It doesn’t help anyone. What it is speaking to me Paul was writing to Titus, a young prea

Whatever you do...
Read Colossians 3:23–24 “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.” What it is speaking to me: I can’t say that I like doing everything. As a kid, you don’t like doing most jobs—especially chores. As you get older, some chores don’t bother you as much, and then you start working. Unless you are incredibly lucky, every job you have will have at l

A Little More...
Read Matthew 6:33 ESV But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Philippians 4:19 ESV And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. What it is speaking to me today: I think most people are like me; we feel we could use a little more in the "resource department." That can look like many things. Sometimes it’s physical (feeling stronger, faster, or smarter), financial (a lit

Silent Souls
Read Psalm 62:1-2, 5-7 Truly my soul silently waits for God; From Him comes my salvation. He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be greatly moved. My soul, wait silently for God alone, For my expectation is from Him. He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be moved. In God is my salvation and my glory; The rock of my strength, And my refuge, is in God. What it is speaking to me: I have been in some crazy storms—and

Guardrails
Read Proverbs 4:20–27 (NKJV) My son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart; For they are life to those who find them, And health to all their flesh. Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life. Put away from you a deceitful mouth, And put perverse lips far from you. Let your eyes look straight ahead, And your eyelids look right before you. Ponder t
